چکیده

In current theoretical models of the blazar subclass of active galaxies, the broadband emission consists of two components: a low-frequency synchrotron component with a peak in the IR to X-ray band, and a high-frequency inverse Compton component with a peak in the gamma-ray band. In such models, the gamma-ray spectral index should be correlated with the location of the low-energy peak, with flatter gamma-ray spectra expected for blazars with synchrotron peaks at higher photon energies and vice versa. Using the EGRET-detected blazars as a sample, we examine this correlation and possible uncertainties in its construction. Subject headings: gamma rays: general; galaxies: active

The Spectral Shape of the Gamma-ray Background from Blazars

The spectral shape of the unresolved emission from different classes of gamma-ray emitters can be used to disentangle the contributions from these populations to the extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGRB). We present a calculation of the unabsorbed spectral shape of the unresolved blazar contribution to the EGRB starting from the spectral index distribution (SID) of resolved EGRET blazars de...

The Spectral Index Distribution of Egret Blazars: Prospects for Glast

The intrinsic distribution of spectral indices in GeV energies of gamma-ray–loud blazars is a critical input in determining the spectral shape of the unresolved blazar contribution to the diffuse extragalactic gamma-ray background, as well as an important test of blazar emission theories. We present a maximum-likelihood method of determining the intrinsic spectral index distribution (ISID) of a...

Does the Blazar Gamma-ray Spectrum Harden with Increasing Flux? - Analysis of Nine Years of Egret Data

The Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) discovered gamma-ray emission from more than 67 blazars during its nine-year lifetime. We conducted an exhaustive search of the EGRET archives and selected all the blazars that were observed multiple times and were bright enough to enable a spectral analysis using standard power-law models. The samp...

An Agn Identification for 3eg J2006-2321

We present a multiwavelength analysis of the high-energy gamma-ray source 3EG J2006-2321 (l = 18 • .82, b = −26 • .26). The flux of this source above 100 MeV is shown to be variable on time scales of days and months. Optical observations and careful examination of archived radio data indicate that its most probable identification is with PMN J2005–2310, a flat-spectrum radio quasar with a 5-GHz...

High Energy Gamma-ray Emission from Blazars: Egret Observations

We will present a summary of the observations of blazars by the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO). EGRET has detected high energy γray emission at energies greater than 100 MeV from more that 50 blazars. These sources show inferred isotropic luminosities as large as 3× 10 ergs s. One of the most remarkable characteristics of the EGRET o...
